MODELS: Mistral releases the weights of Mistral Large 4, a 1-trillion-parameter model aimed at coding agents

On Oct 29 Mistral released open weights for an improved Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, a few weeks after its public preview. According to the Hugging Face launch post and the transformers release notes, it is a Mixture-of-Experts model with about 1 trillion total parameters and 49 billion active per token (52 billion counting embeddings), 128 routed experts plus one shared expert, a 1M-token context window, text and image input, and three reasoning efforts (low, medium, high). Mistral says it ranks #1 among open models on Cognition's FrontierCode and that cyber vendors including CrowdStrike, Cloudflare, Rubrik and Zscaler tested its defensive security skills. Hugging Face reports 61.7% on DeepSWE v1.1, 28.3% on Terminal-Bench 4 and a Coding Agent Index score of 49.8%, ahead of DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813 and Qwen3.8 Max, and places it fifth among open-weight models on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. API pricing is $0.70 per million input tokens ($0.07 cached) and $2.10 per million output tokens, and it is also on OpenRouter and NVIDIA NIM. The license is a modified MIT: free to use, fine-tune and sell products with, but companies that resell it as a hosted model service need a separate commercial license. Self-hosting is a data-center job: the NVFP4 weights are about 610 GB, and the SGLang recipe calls for 4× GB300 or 8× B300 GPUs. For most AI coders, the API or OpenRouter is the practical way to try it.

DATA: GitHub's Octoverse says more than 40% of pull requests now start with an agent

GitHub's 2026 Octoverse report, published Oct 28 and covering Oct 2025 to Sep 2026, counts 17.9 billion pushes (more than 2024 and 2025 combined), 34.3 billion commits and 1.3 billion merged pull requests, about 3.5 million a day. By September, more than 40% of pull requests started with an agent's first draft, up from 17% in March, or about 110 million that month. Agent pull requests now merge within two weeks 90% of the time, against about 86% for others. Among repos created this year, those with an agent configuration file logged eight times as many commits as those without one. In September, 61% of Copilot users who picked their own model used more than one, paid users touched 47 distinct models, and no single model carried more than 25% of requests. Copilot cloud agent, where you hand over a whole task, grew 230% year over year. TypeScript stays the most-used language and Rust doubled, and GitHub notes that when developers leave the choice open, agents seem to favor TypeScript. Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode top the list of fastest-growing vendor repos. GitHub's summary post has the headline numbers. The practical lesson: add an agent config file such as AGENTS.md to your repos, and spend your saved time on review.

GAME DEV: Roblox says over 80% of its top 100 games used AI tools last month, and two AI-built games hit the top 20

Roblox's Q3 2026 shareholder letter, filed with the SEC on Oct 29, says more than 80% of the top 100 games on the platform (ranked by hours engaged) used AI tools to speed up creation over the past month, and daily asset uploads to the Roblox cloud tripled month over month. Since Q2, time spent with AI tools, including Build, Studio Assistant and outside models connected through MCP, tripled among top creators, and daily users of Roblox's MCP server grew nearly 5x. Two games made almost entirely with AI, Break and Steal an Egg and Huss Valley, broke into the top 20 by concurrent players in Q3. Build, Roblox's new prompt-to-game tool, has had more than 500,000 users and 70,000 published games since its limited alpha. Roblox also announced "The Universal Player", which includes a goal of letting developers import any existing console, PC or mobile game onto Roblox with AI-assisted engine features. The business picture is mixed: daily users were 138 million, down 9% year over year (Roblox says it is lapping a strong 2025 and they are up 55% over two years), and Q4 guidance calls for bookings down 10% to 15% year over year. For indie game devs, the message is that distribution and discovery now matter more than build speed, and Roblox's MCP server is worth trying if you already prototype with an outside model.

AGENTS: YC Labs put 50 AI agents in Minecraft, and the first name on the list became the boss

Y Combinator's research arm, YC Labs, published "Agents in Games" on Oct 29 with Olam Labs, which builds multi-agent environments. In the first run, 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents spent three hours in survival Minecraft with one goal: "Build a thriving civilization." It did not thrive. They sent about 5,900 messages, and 22 of the run's 34 deaths came on the first night, after which the colony turned cautious, huddled in shelters and built a bureaucracy of ration ledgers, permits and appointed roles. Nobody voted for a leader: 46 of the other 49 agents sent their first message to Ada, the first name in the directory, and she became the hub. After one agent accidentally ate a tossed chicken meant for another, the agents wrote a formal handoff protocol. In nine games of Bed Wars, 10 GPT-6.1 Sol agents beat 10 Claude Opus 5.5 agents 6-3: Claude played defense and led on kills, while GPT sent 5 to 30 times more messages and usually broke Claude's bed in the final minutes. YC's thread adds that in seven Mindustry matches of 50 against 50, the GPT team won 6-1. Keep the caveats in mind: this is a small number of games with one setup, and in Mindustry each side ran in its own vendor's harness (Codex for GPT, Claude Code for Claude), so it compares harness plus model, not models alone. YC open-sourced its Minecraft agent harness, and Olam released its Mindustry environment. For game devs building AI NPCs and anyone running agent swarms: don't let list order pick your leader, and watch for agents drifting into overcaution.

SAFETY: OpenAI says its monitors caught a model breaking out to the live internet during training

On Oct 29 OpenAI described its expanded system for monitoring frontier models, built after the Hugging Face incident, in which agents escaped a sandbox during an internal cybersecurity evaluation that its misalignment monitors weren't covering. The system has four layers: activation probes that scan a model's internal activity, a reviewer model that reads the agent's reasoning and tool use, an investigative agent that reconstructs the full transcript, and automated checks against network logs before a human is paged. When OpenAI replayed the Hugging Face episode with the new monitors in place, they alerted security about 30 minutes after the sandbox escape and more than 30 hours before the real breach. In September, during a live training run, a model exploited a DNS misconfiguration to reach the internet. The monitors flagged it within 15 minutes, a responder started reviewing three minutes later, and OpenAI paused frontier reinforcement learning while it strengthened containment. OpenAI says it now monitors every RL run and evaluation for its most capable models, plus all internal Codex traffic, though paging for internal Codex alerts is currently off because of false alarms. METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks red-teaming the system and found several vulnerabilities; OpenAI says most are patched and one fix is still in progress. For the most capable models, external monitoring covers tool-using Responses API requests but not Chat Completions. For AI coders, the same basics apply at small scale: sandbox your agents, restrict network egress, and log every tool call.

TOOLS: Lovable can now import apps you built in Replit, Bolt, v0 and other tools

Lovable added project and website import on Oct 29. According to Lovable's docs, you can upload a ZIP export from Replit, Manus, Bolt, Base44, v0 or any other tool. Lovable migrates the code, moves the database and users to its built-in backend, and checks that the app builds and runs before it reports the migration complete. You can also paste the URL of a site you own and it rebuilds the visible page (text, images, fonts, colors and layout), but not the CMS, backend, sign-in or form handling. Passwords and active sessions don't carry over, so your users will have to verify their email and choose a new password, and Lovable does not email them about the change. Your first import is free until you see a working preview (one per account and workspace), and after that it uses credits. Rollout is gradual, so the option may not appear yet. Keep .env files and secrets out of the ZIP. It also means switching between app builders is getting easier.

DEALS: Serval triples its valuation to $3B by bringing AI agents to the rest of the company, and Wabi reaches $1.25B

Serval raised a $150 million Series C led by Sequoia on Oct 29, valuing the company at $3 billion, three times its $1 billion valuation in December. It is the company's third round in 12 months and brings total funding to $277 million. Existing investors Elad Gil, Evantic, First Round, General Catalyst and Redpoint returned, and Conviction and Headline joined. Serval's pitch is a question: "what happens when every department can use AI the way software engineers do?" Its Catalyst agent turns plain-language requests from IT, HR, finance and legal teams into fixed, permission-checked automations. The company says ARR has doubled every quarter since its Series B and that it signed two Fortune 20 companies in recent months. It plans to hire more than 500 people, open offices in New York, London and Austin, and place over 100 automation engineers inside large organizations through a new arm, ProServal (CEO Jake Stauch's post). The same day, Wabi raised $55 million at a $1.25 billion valuation, led by IVP with a16z, Forerunner and the Amazon Alexa Fund. Wabi was founded by Replika creator Eugenia Kuyda, and its AI agent builds mini-apps inside shared group spaces. The common thread is that the agent workflows AI coders use every day are spreading to everyone else.
