Password and Secrets Management for AI Coders (2026)

Keep API keys out of repos and prompts. The free basics, then four tools that make it easy.

Why this matters for AI coders

AI coding tools read your files, run commands and sometimes paste context into prompts. A key in a committed .env or a chat transcript is a key you should rotate. The basics cost nothing: keep .env in .gitignore, never paste live keys into prompts, give each project its own scoped keys, and rotate anything that leaks. Our free starter kit includes a pre-launch security checklist.

How we ranked them

We ranked for a solo developer or tiny team: (1) covers both personal passwords and developer secrets, (2) works from the terminal, (3) a free or open-source start, (4) room to grow into CI and teams. Affiliate status was not a criterion.

A minimal setup that works

  1. Put every key in a password or secrets manager, not in notes or chat.
  2. Load secrets at runtime (for example via a CLI) instead of committing .env files.
  3. Use separate keys per project and per environment.
  4. Rotate keys after sharing a screen recording or transcript that showed them.
