OpenCode vs Claude Code (2026): Pricing, Models and Trade-offs

OpenCode and Claude Code (Agentdex profile) are both terminal-first AI coding agents. They read your codebase, edit files, run commands and work through multi-step tasks. The big difference is who controls the model. Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent, built around Claude models and paid through a Claude subscription or the API. OpenCode is an open-source agent that works with dozens of model providers, including local models. This comparison covers cost, models, features and trade-offs as of October 24, 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Claude Code comes with Claude Pro ($20/month, or $17/month billed annually) and Max (from $100/month). It is not included in the free Claude plan.
  • OpenCode is free and MIT-licensed. You bring your own model from 75+ providers, use its included free models, or pay for OpenCode Zen (pay as you go) or OpenCode Go ($10/month).
  • You cannot use a Claude Pro or Max subscription inside OpenCode. To run Claude models there, you need an Anthropic API key, which bills per token.
  • Pick Claude Code for the most polished experience with Claude models. Pick OpenCode for model freedom, open source and lower or more flexible costs.

Cost: subscription vs bring your own model

Claude Code is included with Claude Pro at $20/month ($17/month billed annually). Max plans start at $100/month for 5x Pro usage, with a higher tier at 20x. Usage limits reset in five-hour windows, with weekly limits on top, so heavy users can hit a wall mid-week on Pro. You can also run Claude Code on API billing. Current API prices per million tokens are $2 input and $10 output for Sonnet 5.5, and $4 and $20 for Opus 5.5. See our Claude Code pricing guide for the details.

OpenCode itself costs nothing. What you pay depends on the model:

  • Use the free models OpenCode includes, which is the cheapest way to try it.
  • Sign in with a GitHub Copilot account or ChatGPT Plus or Pro and use the subscription you already pay for.
  • Add an API key from any of 75+ providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.
  • Run local models, so nothing leaves your machine.
  • Use OpenCode Zen, a pay-as-you-go model gateway, or OpenCode Go at $10/month (Go Plus is $40/month).

The trade-off is predictability. Claude Code on a subscription has a fixed bill and usage caps. OpenCode on an API key has no caps but a bill that tracks your usage.

Features and workflow

Both tools cover the core agent loop: read the codebase, plan, edit several files, run commands and tests, and show you the diff.

Claude Code

Claude Code is tightly tuned to Claude models. It reads a CLAUDE.md file for project rules, can connect to tools through MCP, and supports custom commands, hooks and subagents for larger workflows. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains through extensions, and on desktop and web. Because Anthropic builds both the model and the agent, new Claude features tend to land here first.

OpenCode

OpenCode runs in the terminal, as a desktop app or as an IDE extension. It ships with two built-in agents: Plan, which analyses and proposes changes without editing, and Build, which makes the changes. Running /init creates an AGENTS.md file so the agent understands your project, and /undo and /redo let you step back through changes. It can also run multiple agents in parallel on the same project. OpenCode says it does not store your code or context data, apart from when you use its free models.

Model quality and lock-in

Claude Code only runs Claude models. That is a strength if Claude is your preferred coding model, because the agent is built around it. It is a limit if you want to switch to a cheaper or newer model from another lab.

OpenCode lets you swap models per task. You could plan with a frontier model and run routine edits on a cheaper or local one. The catch is that results vary a lot by model, and you have to do the work of picking and configuring them.

Community and openness

OpenCode is open source under the MIT license, and the project reports more than 220,000 GitHub stars and around 950 contributors. You can read the code, self-host it and change it. Claude Code is a closed product backed by Anthropic, which means a single vendor sets the roadmap, pricing and usage limits.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Claude Code if you already pay for Claude Pro or Max, you want the smoothest experience with Claude models, and a fixed monthly cost suits you.

Choose OpenCode if you want open source, model choice, local models, or to reuse a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT subscription you already have.

Try both if you are unsure. OpenCode's free models and Claude Pro's monthly plan make a side-by-side trial on your own project cheap. Our OpenCode guide and Claude Code alternatives cover more options.

FAQ

Is OpenCode better than Claude Code?

Not across the board. OpenCode gives you more freedom over models and cost. Claude Code gives you a more integrated experience if you mainly use Claude models.

Can I use my Claude subscription in OpenCode?

No. OpenCode does not support Claude Pro or Max logins. To use Claude models in OpenCode, add an Anthropic API key, which bills per token.

Is OpenCode free?

Yes. OpenCode is free and open source. You pay only for the models you use, unless you stick to its free models or run local ones.

Does Claude Code work on the free Claude plan?

No. Claude Code needs a paid plan such as Pro or Max, or API billing.
